実験では、まず、わなの扉を外から頭で押して開けられるようにラットを訓練。そして１匹のラットをわなに閉じこめると、訓練を受けたラットは扉を開けて仲間を救出した。

わなの外にチョコレートがあるときも、自分が独り占めできなくなるのを承知でラットは扉を開けてやった。出てきたラットと接触できないようにしても行動は変わらず、仲間と一緒にいたいという自分の一方的な望みが動機でもないらしい。雌の方が仲間を助ける傾向が強かった。
